In 1994 she was given the Holistic Veterinarian of the Year Award from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. She was the Editor of Advances in Veterinary Science and Comparative Medicine for Academic Press, and is an active member of numerous professional societies. She was recently a member of the National Research Council/BANR Committee on National Needs for Research in Veterinary Science, which released its report in July 2005. Today, Dr. Dodds is actively expanding Hemopet's range of nonprofit services and educational activities. On behalf of Hemopet, she consults in clinical pathology nationally and internationally, and regularly travels to teach animal health care professionals, companion animal fanciers, and pet owners on hematology and blood banking, immunology, endocrinology, nutrition and holistic medicine.

Peter Spanos, co author of The Sport of Schutzhund: A Photographic Essay will be joining me for a discussion on this amazing sport and book.
When BJ and Peter Spanos purchased their first German Shepherd Dog four years ago, they gave no thought to participating the sport of Schutzhund. Today, they not only are active in this popular international sport for working dogs, but they have published the first and only photographic book (coffee table format) that comprehensively depicts all phases of this sport, including training, competitions, dogs at play and with their families, dog portraits and puppies. Schutzhund is in essence a triathlon for working dogs, including tracking, obedience and protection work. Schutzhund tracking is an exercise in obedience and precision in the use of the dog’s natural scenting ability. To the casual observer, the smooth flow of a top-level Schutzhund obedience routine looks simple, but is filled with complex challenges for the dog and involves a carefully constructed “dance” or interplay between the dog and the handler.

My guest this evening is Genevieve Frederick, creator of Feeding Pets of the Homeless. Join us for an insightful evening of homeless animals and people and their needs.
It is estimated by the National Coalition for the Homeless that between 5% to 10% of homeless people have dogs and/or cats. Most people who experience homelessness are homeless for a short period of time, and usually need help finding housing or a rent subsidy. But unfortunately for those with pets it becomes more difficult. Many are forced to choose between their pet or a roof over their head. Surprisingly, most choose to stay on the streets with their pets for longer periods of time. Their pets are nonjudgmental, providing comfort, an emotional bond of loyalty. In some cases they provide the homeless with protection and keep them warm. The tragic part is that the pets of the homeless do not choose their owners.

THE HEALING POWER OF ANIMALS. My guest this evening is David from the Delta Society. Hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers are sometimes places that are cold, frightening and lonely for their residents and patients. Delta Society recognizes that interactions with specially trained animals help to transform a life of discouragement, fear and sadness into one of happiness, independence and hope. Not only do the animals provide a more comforting, nurturing environment, but patients who have had the opportunity to have these specially trained animals as part of their regimen have shown marked improvements both physically and psychologically.

I welcome my guest Marty Tousley, APRN, BC, FT, is a certified hospice bereavement counselor helping people find their way through grief following the death of a family member. She is a volunteer with the Halton-Peel Pet Loss Support Group in Ontario, Canada and the Pet Grief Support Service in Phoenix, AZ, she also works with bereaved animal lovers, both individually and in groups, and consults with veterinary clinics to foster greater understanding of pet loss among staff members, thereby building better helping relationships with grieving clients. A frequent contributor to health care journals, newsletters and magazines for the lay public, she has written several articles and book chapters in the professional nursing and medical literature, and has authored three books addressing various aspects of loss and grief.
